The Fight Over Maps Is a Fight Over Representation
Across the country, debates over voting maps are raising urgent questions about power and representation. At the center is gerrymandering—the manipulation of district lines to influence elections by packing or splitting communities. For Black communities, and especially Black women, this often means diluted voting power despite consistent civic engagement. But this isn’t just political—it’s a public health issue. Who gets elected shapes access to healthcare, quality education, clean environments, and community resources. Gerrymandering doesn’t just redraw maps—it reshapes the conditions that determine our health and overall well-being.
Access Denied: The Quiet Rollback of Black Women in Medicine
Access to medicine, law, and dentistry is increasingly shaped not just by ambition, but by policy—especially federal student loan restrictions that make professional education less accessible. These changes disproportionately impact Black women, who are already underrepresented in healthcare despite being the most educated demographic group in the U.S. This isn’t just an education issue—it’s a wellness issue. Fewer Black women in healthcare means less culturally competent care, worsening outcomes, and continued disparities like the maternal mortality crisis. Protecting access to these fields is essential to protecting community health and equity.
